The GPT store is actually useful now. There are some legitimately well-built custom GPTs — I use a few for content research and one for turning my raw thoughts into structured outlines. The ecosystem has matured.
Real-time web search. This still matters. When something breaks in the AI world — a new model drops, a company announces something — ChatGPT can actually search for it. Claude is still mostly limited to its training cutoff.
Where it falls short: Depth. ChatGPT tends toward fluent, surface-level responses. If I’m working through something complex — a business problem, a nuanced topic, a long document — I often feel like ChatGPT is giving me the “smart sounding” answer rather than the right answer.
Claude: What It Does Well
Long context, actually used. This is Claude’s killer feature and it’s not close. I can paste in a 50-page document and Claude doesn’t just say “sure, I see it” — it uses the information. Ask it a specific question about page 37 and it finds it. That’s transformative for research-heavy work.
Writing quality. I don’t say this lightly: Claude’s prose is better. It’s more considered, less generic, more willing to take a position. When I’m drafting something I care about — a newsletter, a partnership proposal, a long-form take — Claude is where I start.
Honesty about limits. Claude is more likely to tell me “I’m not sure” than to confidently make something up. For a tool I’m relying on for factual content? That matters enormously.
Where it falls short: No image generation. No voice mode. Limited web access. The ecosystem is smaller. If you’re relying on real-time information or need multimodal output, Claude has real gaps.
